Have a Stressful Career? Invest in Candles and Time

June 6th, 2008 . by admin

If you have a hectic life and a busy job, you need to unwind. Working around the clock not only wears you out and makes you grumpy, but it can also affect your health. Too much work and not enough rest can lead to high blood pressure, headaches, fatigue, and other ailments.

The big problem that most career types have is how to unwind after a long day at work. Arriving exhausted from work, maybe the only thing you want to do is flip on the TV to vegetate, but this will not relax you at all. Sitting in front of the TV and zoning out is unlikely to relax you because so many of the images shown are violent or are created to upset rather than soothe. Also, your body’s response to the TV is not the greatest. You actually burn less calories sitting in front of a TV than you would just sitting. Watching TV is like being in a light doze, but without the refreshing wakefulness you enjoy after a nap.

A better idea after a long day at work is some form of very mild exercise – a short walk in a naturally beautiful spot or a quick session of yoga are both ideal. Exercise will get your whole body moving and will improve your mood while giving you a gentle energy boost. Even ten to fifteen minutes of movement will help. Once you have exercised a little bit, eat a small healthy snack. An apple or another piece of fruit is ideal. Vegetables and a low fat dip are also great. The small snack will boost your flagging energy levels.

Once you have taken care of your body, it is time to take care of your mind. Light some Votivo candles or other scented candles to unwind and invest fifteen minutes or an hour just on you. I have two friends who are consummate career go-getters. One is an Internet marketing consultant with her own business and small family and another works in US immigration and volunteers many hours a week. Both swear by taking time out every day to recharge.

What could you do during your fifteen minutes to one hour relaxation time? There are many possibilities:

  • Read a book you’ve been wanting to read or flip through some fun magazines
  • Do some word puzzles or mind puzzles
  • Knit, crochet, or sew
  • Just kick back and listen to some music
  • Take a bath, sauna, or long, luxurious shower
  • Take on a creative project you’ve been putting off
  • Garden
  • Sip some pleasant drink and just daydream
  • Take a hike or a walk outside
  • Go see a movie
  • Go window shopping or check out that new café you have been wondering about

The point is that this time is about you. Just stay away from work or anything that you feel you “have” to do and you should be fine. One additional caveat: stay away from the TV and the Internet. Both activities do not really soothe you and can make you more tense. Take the time out each day and you will find your career and the rest of your life running much more smoothly.
